I know that the Cicadas are somehow in the grasshopper family but there is just something to be said for a creature that hides for 13 -17 years....pops out to do a frenzy of eating, breeding, and laying eggs and then back to hibernate.  The sounds in the woods can be deafening but it is kind of a cool sound....like experience a comet or something....a rare phenomenon of sorts.  The sounds come from them rubbing their legs together - who knew?  It actually sounds like one of those R&B seed shaker musical instruments.  I kinda like the sounds of crickets in the summer time too.  I guess that is why I live in the country and enjoy it.  So far, we have been able to keep the cicadas from eating our veggies and stuff though surely they are dining on our big oak tress and such...but....hopefully to no avail.  Once in every 13-17 years - we can donate some greenery to the cause.  They are totally harmless to humans so...just embrace it or maybe enjoy it.
